Robert Hess was born in Little Rock, AR, where visiting and working at jobsites with his general contractor father inspired his passion for architecture.  He went on to study under Faye Jones, a protege of Frank Lloyd Wright, at the University of Arkansas' School of Architecture, graduating in 1977.  He was immediately hired by Roark, Perkins and Kennedy, PA, AIA, in Little Rock where he gained experience in urban, commercial, industrial and residential design.  From there, Robert moved to a small firm to become the principal design architect and project manager at Howell Associates, PA, AIA, in Boone, NC, which offered more challenging mountain landscapes.  Here Robert created family homes, churches, apartment complexes, hotels, commercial buildings and vacation homes for mountains and beaches.

With a growing family, Robert took a position with Duke Energy in Charlotte, NC, where he shaped an evolving uptown, including corporate offices, urban buildings, power plants and green spaces.  His work attracted freelance clients, honing Robert's residential skills and developing his expertise integrating structures into the Charlotte-Mecklenburg landscape.  Robert is proud of the many jewels he has installed in the Queen City's crown.

Having attracted a freelance client-base, Robert founded Hess Architecture, PA, with Junior Associate Dekker, a talented boxer, to focus on his primary passions: designing dreams for families, developing relationships with individuals and creating facilities for small businesses to thrive. When not at the drawing table, Robert can be found mastering the jobsite, networking with Matthews Executive Group, leading his Elevation-Church small group, participating in professional-development and making sure his family has good coffee.  In his downtime, Robert enjoys vacationing with his family, watching sports and solving crossword puzzles.  He is the devoted husband of Terry, proud father of Taylor and Adrienne, amazed grandfather of Callie and Carly, and grateful son of the original Bob Hess.
